Lu Forestiero (The Stranger), traditional, Italian; from Apricena in the Foggio Provence of Puglia, southeastern Italy. I learned this song from the recording by Matteo Salvatore, ‘Lamenti di Mendicant (Italian Beggar Songs). A kind of lullaby that only hints at the underlying, or vaguely implied, life of transient workers (the word ‘forestiero’ could also be translated ‘foreigner’). Seasonal workers would wander on foot from village to village; in Gargano and Tavoliere workers would work grueling hours harvesting tomatoes for poor wages, resting in the farmyard for short periods of time.
